“Clock is ticking fast” – Nantongo Zziwa
According to the EALA Speaker, Rt. Margaret Nantongo Zziwa, President of the GPH, Africa Chapter, says, “clock is ticking fast with the period set to have realized the MDGs expected to drift in 2015”.
A head of Plenary Session of the EALA that will take place in Arusha, Tanzania next week August 19, 2013 on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that also marks the Silver Jubilee of the Global Parliamentarians on Habitat (GPH).
The meeting will focus on issues of MDGs with each region likely to share their experiences on the subject matter.
Rt. Zziwa noted during a press conference “Are we doing enough to enable the globe realize Shelter for all by 2015 among others? I think we can do more”.
She mentioned that some governments had left the role entirely to the local governments with little or no tools, meager resources and inadequate human capacity to handle the challenge.
Vice Presidents will accompany Margaret Nantongo Zziwa from regional GPH groups Ricardo Fidel Pacheco Rodriguez, Senator from Mexico, Ronald Kiandee, and MP from Malaysia and Jerko Rosin from Croatia.
Presentations from Civil Society Organizations on Global Habitat issues will discuss issues include planning, settlement and challenges the continent is facing currently.
Urban experts say, leaders should address essential dimensions of poverty and their effects on people’s lives attacking pressing issues related to food security, water and sanitation, transportation, housing and environmental sustainability to overcome climate vulnerability.
There is a growing urbanization challenges including housing and land insecurity, immigration and job availability among youth.
Bobi Odiko, Senior Public Relations Officer, East African Legislative Assembly says, “EALA wishes to use this conference to propose recommendations to UN on the post 2015 MDG (MDG + 2015) agenda”
Adding that the EALA shall discuss matters of legislative business, which includes receiving and debate reports of the Committees of EALA; Considering the EAC disaster Risk
GPH has maintained close co-operation in culminating in its participation both at second UN Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in June 1996 and at the Istanbul+5 Meeting in New York in 2001 since its inception to date.
