Peace organisation commits to promoting reconciliation

The Association of Volunteers for Peace, Association des Volontaires de la Paix (AVP) in its French acronym, has laid a strategy of promoting peace unity and reconciliation among genocide survivors and its perpetrators in Rwanda.

The 1994 genocide against the Tutsi claimed lives of over a million people in a period of 100 days and twenty years after, the government of Rwanda and various organisations have put in efforts of reconciling the community, at a rate of over 80 percent.

The Association of Volunteers for Peace was formed in 1991, as a human rights and peace advocacy organisation. Todate it operates in 37 sectors but has plans of expanding its activities in all the 417 sectors countrywide.

Venuste Karambizi, the head of AVP says that at the time of genocide the association was still young and it could barely do anything to stop the activities of implementing genocide by the then government,

He said that however the organisation has managed to set up programs to bring genocide victims and their perpetrators together through the process of reconciliation

In a testimony of one of the beneficiaries, Melane Kanyoni , she said that through training programs by AVP she was able to reconcile with her neighbour called Bosco- who was always avoiding the her in the community

She said that Bosco managed to overcome the shame and publically confessed how he developed fear and anger that resulted to avoid her always whenever they crossed paths.
