Muhanga: Transit centre has never been a prison-Mayor
The mayor of Muhanga District, Yvonne Mutakwasuku has denied residents’ allegations that the transit centre in Mushishiro sector in Muhanga district has turned into a prison.
This follows residents’ complaints that some of them were detained at this centre for more than a month.
Though the transit centre was meant for idlers and other people that are arrested for lack of identification, residents are worried over their safety in this place since men, women and children are kept in one place.
However, the district mayor contradicts with the residents saying it’s not a prison for detainees to stay longer than one day, which they spend at the transit before being taken to the prison.
Mutakwasuku explains that the transit centre was set up to improve security in Muhanga town especially to deal with people who are caught without identification.
She asserts that no one has ever been taken to the transit centre with proper identification. While at this place, the females are separated from males for safety reasons.
“After identifying each and everybody’s reason for arrest, some are taken to the rehabilitation centre at Iwawa Island for a better future,” she denotes.
If they are youth that have escaped from their parents and come to town for the first time, we send them back to their homes with the help of district administration and sector authorities, she narrates.
