Rwanda : Vulnerable communities living in desperate state
A community of historical marginalized residents in Busasamana sector in Nyanza district has said that their lives are desperate state since government has not compensated them for their farmlands which were used for community settlements.
The group which lives in in Kavumu village, Nyamagana cell says that they have resorted to the traditional clay works to earn a living, though this doesn’t bring in enough income for survival.
The victims say that their piece of land was bought for them by one of the expatriate missionaries (Heni) and they have nowhere to go since the local government has constructed a settlement in their piece of land.
Nyanza district Mayor, Abdallah Murenzi says that it’s the responsibility of the district to take care of such communities and there is support that will be provided by the district to such communities and this will depend on the available resources.
At least 50 families of historically deprived communities have been affected in the process. They say that the failure for local government to compensate them for the land has affected the livelihoond in the past seven years.
