Rwanda : One year old baby retrieved from pit latrine

Police in Gasabo district successfully managed to retrieve a one and half old baby from a pit latrine. The child had fallen in to the 10meters pit due to lack of care from her parents.

The baby identified as Gift Ishimwe fell into an approximately ten meter deep pit latrine at around 3pm, on January 12, 2013. The incident occurred in Kinyinya sector, Gacuriro cell.

Police reports indicated that the child was the child had been left unattended to and it crawled a few meters from the house before he fell into the pit latrine.

Apparently residents in the neighborhood managed to hear the baby screaming from inside the pit latrine and immediately called for police rescue.

The baby was removed from the pit, with the help of the Police Fire and Rescue Brigade, who managed to scoop the baby from the deadly pit latrine while she was still alive. However she had started getting respiratory difficulties.

according to Police sources, the baby was was rushed to Kibagabaga Hospital for further medical treatment and was reportedly said to be in good health conditions and waiting to be discharged any time soon.

Superintendent Bertin Mutezintare, the Commanding Officer (CO) of the Fire and Rescue Brigade said that about fifteen similar incidents occurred last year (2012) across the country and Police managed to save five lives.

Though the Police forces, hailed resident for alerting the police on time, they also condemned parents for not being responsible over their children and asked the community to awaken to such cases so as to reduce such reckless deaths.
