Rwanda : Abortion is illegal in Rwanda-says Senator Mukasine
Senator Marie Claire Mukasine has reminded Rwandans that the law on abortion has never been abolished and all Rwandans, especially women should take this seriously and abide by the laws of the country.
Women leaders told Senator Mukasine that some Rwandans have presumed that the legislative has passed a bill to legalize abortion and somehow get mislead in the process.
While addressing women leaders and decision makers in Muhanga, this September 24, 2012, Mukasine said that Rwandans should abide by the laws of the country and take into account their personal responsibility at maintaining laws of the land.
She specifically pointed out the bill on abortion; emphasizing that the law legalizing abortion in Rwanda is none existent and citizens should endeavor to know that laws so as to avoid breaking laws out of ignorance.
She however said that the existing law on abortion instead punishes those who commit or attempt to commit and any accomplice in the act of abortion.
She, however explained that the confusion may be the articles which under special circumstance, can permit abortion under complicated medical conditions or rape cases– which also have to be approved by the legal structures, such as courts of justice and police.
