Rwanda | Woman arrested

Manizabayo allegedly assaulted the

her husband with a machete

Police in the Eastern district of Kirehe are holding a woman identified as Marcelline Manizabayo for allegedly assaulting her husband with a machete.

Manizabayo, 22, is said to have attacked her husband Jean de Dieu Niyonshuti on the day of her arrest with a machete and cut him on the forehead, leaving him unconscious.

Niyonshuti   was rushed to Kirehe hospital where he’s currently getting medical treatment.

According to Police in Kirehe, the cause of incident is suspected to be a family dispute after the couple argued over money apparently which the victim took from his wife.

It is said that Niyonshuti gave his wife Rwf25, 000, to keep it. However, when he requested for his money, the wife gave him Rwf26, 000 unknowingly, including her Rwf1, 000.

When the wife asked the husband for a refund, however, the husband refused, which tempted the wife to use violent means to recover her money.

According to Police Spokesperson, Eastern Region, Supt Benoit Nsengiyumva, most family conflicts and domestic crimes in the region are caused by land disputes, illegal marriages, polygamy, drunkenness and husbands who mistreat their spouses. This prompts the latter to seek other means to defend themselves.

He however said that measures have been taken to contain the situation and these include sensitization.

“We work hand-in-hand with the community through Community Policing by sharing information on families that could be having conflicts. We try to advise them to seek further assistance such as courts of law or arbitration, if they cannot solve their misunderstandings amicably,” he said.He added that the issue is on the decrease following the new measures initiated.
