The police on Wednesday shot a Kigali notorious burglar as he was trying to flee arrest.

The thief was identified as Hamisi Ntawugashira alias Muzehe. He was shot dead by security organs in Ruyenzi cell, Runda sector, Kamonyi district.

Ntawugashira was found in possession of stolen bags and laptops as well as tools used to break into houses.

Investigations indicate that Ntawugashira was part of a group of burglars that have terrorized Kigali city neighborhoods especially Nyamirambo. It has been established that these groups hide their loot on the outskirts of the city where they have rented houses.

According to the executive secretary of Ruyenzi cell Epimaque Rwandenzi, his area has of recent attracted unknown people.

He said that there are houses rented by unknown groups of young men who are suspected of being involved in dubious activities.

“These people spend working hours idling within the neighborhoods but are nowhere to be seen during evening hours or are seen returning to their houses in wee hours,” he explained.

Rwandenzi attributed the identification of Ntawugashira to good collaboration between Community Policing Committees, citizens, reservists and local authorities who suspected Ntawugashira and his group to be involved in criminal activities.

Police Spokesperson Superintendent Theos Badege acknowledged citizens’ role in the crackdown of   thieves. He urged the public to continue sharing timely information with security organs to enhance crime prevention.

“We warn those who harbour thoughts of getting rich through stealing that there is no future in in that route,” said Badege.

The Runda Sector executive secretary Christine Nyirandayisabye as well as the Kamonyi District Police commander (DPC) Superintendent Aimable Rukundo urged residents to be vigilant and to cooperate with security organs so that culprits are arrested.
