Rwanda | Nyagatare: Farmers to pay for manure before time expires
Nyagatare district administration has asked farmers who were given manure in the season A of 2011, to pay back before June 30th 2012.
Farmers are asked to pay before time expires or their property is auctioned to pay off the debt.
During the district’s general meeting that held on June 26th 2012, the authorities talked about the issue of manure repayment and how it can be solved.
District Mayor Fred Atuhe Sabiti, expresses: “Up to now Nyagatare district is the first rich district. How can we be the last ones in Eastern Province to pay for the manure given to us on credit?”
Although no serious reason for delayed payment was cited, some cell leaders revealed that farmers are waiting to pay after harvesting and selling their produce.
However, this manure was given to them in September 2011 season, which means farmers harvested in that season, sold the produce and kept quiet about paying for manure.
After Ministry of Agriculture took part in demanding for the payment, Nyagatare district says it is a big shame and asks local leaders to make farmers pay without fail.
The district mayor says: “They have to pay before June 30th 2012, and if they are adamant, take them to the reconciliators for their property to be auctioned and pay for manure because they used it.”
The district official asked all sector leaders to present to him reports of how manure money was collected before June 5th 2012.
Matimba sector, given manure worth over Rwf2.5 million has already paid over 90percent of the money and only Rwf140000 is remaining.
Karangazi sector, have paid only Rwf5 million of Rwf25 million used to buy manure for farmers.
All sector and cell leaders promised Nyagatare mayor that they will have completed paying by June 30th 2012 as they agreed on with the residents.
